Kids School Holiday Activities in Toowoomba & Darling Downs
The school holidays are here! As parents too, this means creating our list of fun and active school holiday activities that ditch the screen time and promote learning, the outdoors and family time. Today, we thought we’d share our list with you so you have some quick, easy and fun go-to’s for your family!
Queens Park is a hub of activity in the summer months – and it’s a favourite. It’s a fun space on its own with the Botanic Gardens, all-abilities playground on-site, and plenty of space for picnicking and games, but it also hosts exciting events over summer, including:
- Christmas Wonderland – an event hosted at the Botanic Gardens in Queens Park, and is open daily (7pm – 10pm) to the public for this festive season from December 7th right through to December 24th. It has a gold coin entry and there’s even free ice cream for the kids! You can find more information here.
- New Year’s Eve Fireworks – at Queens Park, Frogs Hollow, you can see out the end of 2019 with a family entertainment show, community games, kids rides and food stalls. Food & Rides are open from 4.30pm, show starts at 5pm, and fireworks at from 7.45pm to 8pm. More information can be found here.
Local bush walks– we love exploring the beautiful scenery on our front door with our kids. We talk about all the things the kids might see, and show them pictures so they know what to be on the lookout for! We prepare some homemade scroggin together the night before, letting the kids choose which nuts, seeds and dried fruit they’d like in their bags. We love finishing off with a picnic and some games! Here’s a great curated list of walks of all lengths and the Toowoomba Regional Council also has their list here.
Darling Downs Zoo – this is a family favourite, and an absolute winner every time we go. It’s open daily from 9am to 4pm, you can find animals from Africa, South America, South-east Asia & Australia. You’ll also find many species of animals not seen in any other Queensland Zoo! Find all the information you need right here.
Picnic Point Lookout and Parkland deserves its own mention with its weekend children’s train, playground, bush trails that wrap around and its beautiful location! This one’s a goodie for taking great snaps to send the relatives this Christmas too! 160-acres perched high on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, overlooking Main Range and the Lockyer Valley. Take a picnic and enjoy the surroundings for the afternoon. We know we will be! Find more information here.
Cobb + Co Museum has holiday programmes on this year that we love. This includes Science on the Move (December 7 – May 4) and Under the Sea (Monday January 13 – Sunday January 19). You can find more information here.
Jondaryan Woolshed is a wealth of activities – damper making, arts and crafts, miniature trains and tractor train rides!
Newtown Park State Rose Garden. With over 1,500 roses planted, we love this garden! If your child loves to draw, this is a great opportunity to bring the coloured pencils or paints – or have them take a photo of a rose and bring it home for them to paint! All information can be found here.
If pains develop, we’re here through the summer!
Our team of podiatrists and physiotherapists in Toowoomba and Warwick work extensively with kids to help them stay healthy, happy, active and pain-free. If pains or niggles start these holidays, get them treated early before they become longstanding and follow them into the 2020 school year.
