Joint Mobilisation Toowoomba.
A simple, non-invasive, and pain-free way to help you get back to feeling and performing at your best.
What is Joint Mobilisation?
The human foot is a biomechanically complex structure – each contains 26 bones and 33 joints that all move independently of each other and are responsible for supporting your entire body weight. Over time, the joints tend to lock up as a result of the impact sustained from running, walking, standing, and general life.
Joint mobilisation is a manual therapy that offers a fast and efficient way to create movement at the joints, reduce pain, restore function, and stimulate healing in the foot. If necessary, your podiatrist may individually assess each bone and joint in the foot to find and treat the cause of your pain rather than just your symptoms.
It is often used in conjunction with other hands-on treatment methods, such as trigger point therapy and soft tissue massage.
What Can Be Treated with Joint Mobilisation?
Podiatrists may use joint mobilisation to treat a variety of complaints and ailments in the feet and ankles.
Ankle sprains and instability
Osteoarthritis
Achilles tendonitis and tendinopathy
Hammer toes
Morton’s Neuroma
Pregnancy foot and ankle pain
Arch pain
Muskuloskeletal injuries
What to Expect from Joint Mobilisation Treatment?
Your podiatrist will perform a hands-on assessment of the affected area using gentle pressure to determine where the issue is occurring. They will use this information to tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs.
Treatment is generally not painful and you’ll usually find that stiff joints start to loosen after only a few minutes of adjustment. After treatment, as your joints start to move more freely again, you may experience a little tenderness.
In the case of ‘stuck’ or ‘restricted’ joints, some people report that their symptoms worsen after treatment is restored, but functional improvement and pain relief rapidly follow.
You may be asked to perform strengthening and movement exercises at home between sessions to aid in your recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Joint Mobilisation?
Joint mobilisation as a treatment method provides many benefits, including:
- It allows the body to naturally repair and heal itself through mobilising restricted joints to promote fluid production.
- It’s completely non-invasive and utilises gentle, pain-free techniques.
- It can form part of your daily life, allowing you to stay at work and remain active while you heal.
- It improves joint integrity, foot posture, and muscle strength.
- It returns joints and bones to their optimal position, helping chronic musculoskeletal injuries to heal.
- It improves postural stability.

Your Joint Mobilisation Questions Answered.
Will mobilisation cause arthritis?
Many people are concerned when hearing a ‘pop’ noise during mobilisation because of the old wives’ tale that it will lead to arthritis. Quite the opposite is true, however. Mobilisation has been shown to offer many benefits in treating conditions like arthritis, such as improving mobility and range of motion.
When would joint mobilisation not be advised?
There are a few instances where we would not recommend this treatment, such as a suspected fracture or in the case of hypermobile joints, joint coalitions, and bony blockages. Your podiatrist will discuss your condition in more detail and recommend mobilisation if they feel it’s appropriate.
How often will I need joint mobilisation?
While most patients report improvements in movement and pain immediately, more than one session is usually required for long-lasting results. You may have a session more frequently in the beginning (once or twice weekly), then less frequently as your symptoms improve.

Take the First Step in Relieving Your Pain Today.
As part of the biomechanical assessment, we examine what movement is restricted at the joints and what consequences this has on the overall movement of the feet and legs through gait. Our trained podiatrists and physiotherapists may then work to mobilise the joints as part of your management plan to get your feet moving efficiently and speed up your recovery.
