Jays is a Queenslander at heart. Born in Gympie and having grown-up in Brisbane, he studied a Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) at QUT and moved to Toowoomba soon after graduating. He joined the team in October 2012 and has been working full time at Optimise Health ever since.
Jays is an all-rounder at the clinic, treating a mixture of all conditions. This includes treatment of skin and nail issues (ingrown nails, calluses, corns etc.) and treatment of musculoskeletal issues related to biomechanics or injury.
His favourite aspect of podiatry is the dermatologic side (skin, nails and nail surgery) due to the hands on nature of the work and the opportunity to maintain strong professional relationships over long periods of time. Outside of work, Jays enjoys watching and playing most sports, the beach, riding his bicycle, attempting to cook new foods and a bit of reformer pilates.
Jays is a fan of good personality questionnaires, such as that used in Vogue 73 Questions. Here are his answers to ten questions from this questionnaire:
- If you could master one instrument, what would it be?
I get mesmerised by people playing the piano – it would have to be this one. - What’s your go to snack?
Crunchy peanut butter on toasted sourdough (fresh from the toaster). - What job other than your own would you like to attempt?
If not working as a podiatrist, I would be a primary school teacher. I have great memories of my primary school days and remember all of my teachers. A good teacher makes learning fun. And because kids are the future, I think it would be nice to impact their lives in a positive way. - If you had a tattoo, what would it be?
I do like some quotes from the Ancient Greeks and from the renaissance period. Maybe the famous saying by Rene Descartes I’d have tattooed on my back or arm in Latin: “I think, therefore I am.” - You are stuck on an island and you can pick one food to eat forever without getting tired of it. What’s your pick?
Boring I know, but I’d pick rice. It’s healthy, will fill me with energy and strangely enough I do really like the taste. - If you made a documentary, what would it be about?
I’m fascinated by the concept of high performance in high pressure situations. My documentary would have something to do with this. - What’s a song you can listen to on repeat?
A bit embarrassing to admit but I do like Justin Bieber’s music. His “Purpose” album is my favourite. Many tracks from this album I could listen to on repeat (Sorry, Company etc.). - If you could switch lives with someone for a day, who would it be?
LeBron James. But on game day during the playoffs. To observe his routine, his rituals and his internal dialect would be so interesting. - What sound or noise do you love?
I love the sound of a 3 pointer going ‘swish’ through a basketball hoop – it’s the sound of perfection! - What 3 people (living or dead) would you like to have over for dinner?
Besides my closest family or friends, I’d pick 3 famous people that inspire me: Jamie Oliver, Ed Sheeran and Alain de Botton.
